wolf sweater gold socks

I have decided to attempt wardrobe nirvana by creating outfits on Polyvore using items I already own. So far it’s been fun and useful for Monday-morning-lateness (guilty as charged).

I’ve also realised that 90 percent of the time I’m inspired first by accessories in deciding what to wear. Fascating! I shall now invest in new accessories knowing they are the indispensable part of my style, now excuse me while I flex my plastic over at Topshop.com….mmmmmmmmmm!

How not to dress like you’re 50 Part 2 – relaxed easy pieces

THE MATURE WOMAN'S ANSWER TO STYLE - PART 2 EASY RELAXED PIECES

In one of my previous posts How not to dress like you're 50, I highlighted some common mistakes women in this age group make with their outfits.  This time I have focused on how to wear easy, relaxed items that are super-comfy and still exude style and everyday glamour.

Talking to mature women about how they want to look, overwhelmingly they have simply lost confidence or feel they don't know where to shop for clothes they like.  This will inevitably include not wanting to enter shops in which the clothing looks aimed at a much younger demographic or they would like to try online shopping but aren't sure where to start.

Of course, I'm happy to show you lovely Melbourne ladies where to go myself (head to my pages for contacts/bookings) but if you just need some guidance here are my things to note:

  • I can't stress enough how flattering wide-leg pants are (at any age, but particularly over 50) and they are relatively easy to find at all price points.  If you're able to spend a bit more, Malene Birger does excellent ones and the mustard coloured ones featured above are now on sale!
  • Don't shy away from bold colours, if you get the fit and the shape exactly right you will look fabulous and you only need to check out Advanced Style to see there is no age limit on wearing colour!
  • Of course there will often be trend-driven pieces in stores, avoid what doesn't suit and stick to shapes that flatter you – update the colour or play with accessories in new styles to update your trusted wardrobe staples
  • Most of all, enjoy yourself – there is no better time in your life for experimenting with your style.  You have an inner confidence the under 20's can only dream about so hold your head high, be proud of what you have achieved and wear things that make you feel good, you've earned it!

CREATE A WARDROBE – WITH 6 PIECES!

CREATE A WARDROBE - WITH 6 PIECES!

A couple of friends have given me their 'wish-list' of style ideas which got me thinking about how we all manage when we are between sizes (baby/christmas/oh-damn-those-scales) and how when you have a little one in tow you have to re-think your jewellery options!

Things to note:

Wednesday night drinks

I'd forgotten how much fun a night out in Melbourne can be!  Apart from perhaps New York, no city in the world seems to do laneway hidden bars quite like Melbourne and this one had all the elements you want, gorgeous decor, lots of polished dark woods and aged, pitched ceiling, friendly and hilarious bar staff who mix excellent drinks, good company.  www.murmur.com.au/ Upon my return from my friend's birthday celebrations, a second 'lively' discussion took place with my husband about bum-bags (me: 'but its Gucci for christs sake!' alright, not REAL Gucci but still!) This is what I wore… happy Wednesday everyone!bum-bag? how DARE you! Pleated watermelon maxi skirt MANGO, scalloped edged ivory top TOPSHOP, 'bum-bag' (I prefer leather money belt!) GUCCI (fake I assume as it was from an op-shop), tan/black chevron scarf TEMT, nude flats, not seen JO MERCER, man's watch – gift, bobble rings WALLIS
